Most people do their keyword searches wrong. It’s mainly because they have been misinformed over the years. As an
online business owner, understanding proper keyword research is crucial to your success.
Well, probably not completely in love, but close.
I’m going to keep the keyword research process simple for you.
There are three things I concentrate on when doing keyword research. Yes, you read it right, just three.
These are the only three things you need to watch for when doing keyword research for your website.
The 3 Pillars of Effective Keyword Research
1. Low COMPETITION: This is what I focus on first. If the keyword has too much competition, don’t even consider it. The reason is that without being able to rank efficiently, you’re not going to be getting any traffic.
No rankings = No point!
When looking for competition, look for a metric called QSR (Quote Search Results). There is only one tool I am aware of that offers this piece of data efficiently and that is Jaaxy. And yes, that is the tool I use for my keyword research.
QSR allows you to determine the EXACT number of competing pages in Google….which is your REAL competition. I look for a QSR of under 300 (that means, 300 competing pages in Google). The closer to ZERO the better.
First Keyword Pillar: Under 300 QSR
2. Must get some TRAFFIC: I don’t try to find the “homerun” keywords. If I can get ranked, I will settle for bunt singles all day. There is no sense in “trying” to get rankings under a high volume, but high competition keyword. There are too many big boys out there so I won’t get ranked. So who cares how much traffic it could potentially get?
I go for the sure thing. If a keyword gets over 50 searches per month, that’s the one for me. Yes, you read it right, 50.
Are you crazy Andy! That seems really low? You’re right, it is very low but guess what. These low volume keywords add up when you start ranking them. Get 1st-page rankings in the search engines under 10, or 20….0r 100 of these and you are going to.
AND, the lower competition, moderate traffic keywords are typically more relevant and convert better anyways. Another added bonus.
Second Keyword Pillar: Over 50 searches per month
3. Must make SENSE. How difficult is it to try to fudge content together when you are using a keyword that doesn’t make sense. Take this article’s title as an example. The title makes sense and the target keywords fit naturally within the title. All of your keywords should do the same.
As a rule of thumb, if it seems like I am forcing awkward content to target a keyword, I will not use it. It must make sense because remember, we are writing content for our audience, not search engines.
Third Keyword Pillar: Must make sense to a human being!
